The following is a break down of equipment and materials costs for each of the PLTW courses based on estimates from the 2003-2004 PLTW Purchasing Manual. These estimates are based on several assumptions that may not be true for your school:

  • Furniture costs are based on a "bare walls" lab;
  • The  prices are based on 26 students per class
  • Computers are included in the equipment cost column;
  • Consumable prices are based on class sizes of 26 and must be multiplied by the number of sections taught;
  • Resource materials, such as textbooks, laboratory manuals, instruction software, etc., are not included in the below prices;
  • All Fischertechnik items are included under the equipment costs.

Total cost for four middle school laboratories with 26 student stations in each lab is approximately $62,479.36.  These costs include laptop computers for four teachers. The cost can be reduced if the school already has equipment and/or computers meeting or exceeding the PLTW specifications.

# Note: One computer laboratory is required to teach the PLTW sequence of courses. The costs of the computer laboratory are reflected in the totals for IED. The laboratory should be purchased with the first course implemented. If that course is POE, then the POE totals will need to be adjusted accordingly. In an effort to reduce costs, it is recommended that schools schedule the computer laboratory as necessary to accommodate the needs of the other PLTW courses.

* Denotes specialization courses. Per your School District Agreement, you are only required to implement one of these two courses.

Total cost for one high school with 20 student stations equipped for all five courses is approximately:

  • $80,420   if CEA is selected as the specialty course or
  • $126,370 if CIM is selected as the specialty course

This cost can be reduced if the school already has equipment and/or computers meeting or exceeding the PLTW specifications.

High school costs are based on one high school lab with 20 student stations. This cost can be reduced if the school already has equipment and/or computers meeting or exceeding PLTW specifications. Please See Computer Requirements

Software Costs

You must obtain a yearly lease for software to support the courses you are offering.

  • Your Autodesk lease will now include AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Inventor Professional, Autodesk Viz, and Autodesk Architectural Desktop.  These products comprise the Autodesk Design Academy (ADA) Package.  The specially priced annual lease through PLTW is $3,995.00.
  • You may now use Autodesk products for classes other than PLTW classes.
  • You will have 100 licenses of the Autodesk products for your school.  High Schools may share their Autodesk Inventor Professional licenses with participating district Middle Schools within the 100 license parameter.
  • High Schools in their first year of PLTW implementation may elect to lease just Autodesk Inventor Professional for $2,900.  In this scenario, you will have 100 licenses of Autodesk Inventor Professional that may only be used in conjunction with PLTW courses.  First year schools would then migrate to the ADA lease in year two.
  • Middle Schools without a participating district High School may also choose the Autodesk Inventor Professional option for $2,900 per year

Professional Development Costs

Laptop computer for each PLTW teacher $1,275
Summer Training Institute
Registration depending onthe institute attended $1,600 to $2,2200
Room and board depending on the institue attended $600 - $1000

Each National Affiliate Training Center (NATC) establishes its own fees to cover its room/board/tuition costs. These vary because of the level and type of financial support within each state, the location of the NATC, and the requirement that each NATC offer a self-sustaining program.

Please see the Cost Of Summer Training Page on the National PLTW site.
